Corner Deli
$3,500 – oil on canvas – 16" h x 24" w
I used artist’s license here, and placed this car in front of this storefront. Both exist, but separately. The deli is on Kenmare Street between Lafayette and Centre streets in New York City. I thought the forms, colors, and “feel” of the Corvette and the deli were perfect together. – N.R. |

Central Park Lake in Winter
$900 – oil on canvas – 8" h x 10" w
When it snows, I like to explore the city. One trip to Central Park started me on a series of paintings. Everywhere I looked, there were interesting compositions, luscious colors, wonderful textures. Oil paint has a tactile component that captures the feel of the snow and light very well. This is the first painting completed. – N.R. |

Water Street, 1980s
$7,500 – oil on canvas – 24" h x 40" w
From Beekman Street looking east toward Water Street, with Peck Slip on the left, and the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. The Seaman’s Church Institute came to be built on the vacant lot. It is now the Blue School.
The light from the east comes powerfully forward toward the viewer. I used shadows cast by groups of buildings to give depth and perspective to the composition. I like the empty feel of this scene. – N.R. |

Metropolitan Lumber
$8,500 – oil on canvas – 40" h x 30" w
Corvettes are not usually associated with New York City. When I saw this striking yellow car in front of the massive stonework of this building on Spring Street in Soho, I just had to paint it. I used oils because the medium captures mechanical things so well. I simplified the building to make the sculptural forms of the car stand out. – N.R. |

Fulton Market
$7,500 – oil on canvas – 24" h x 36" w
Fulton Market, bounded by Fulton, South, Beekman and Front streets, was built in 1983 as part of the South Street Seaport development. It is the fourth building on the site of the original Fulton Market of 1822.
Old and the new appear together. I stood on Front Street for this view, and painted the reflections of the historic buildings (across the street and behind the viewer) in the glass of the brand new market. The reflections are wavy and uneven, which I thought convey the age and feel of the old nineteenth century structures very well. – N.R. |

Exhaust Fan
$2,000 – oil on canvas – 12" h x 18" w
This could be an abstract painting, and my treatment of the subject fosters that impression. I set up my easel in the mechanical equipment room of the Fulton Market building in 1984, and painted this on site, something that I rarely do. The indirect lighting and large, simple forms of this giant exhaust fan–it filled the room–spoke to me, and demanded to be painted. – N.R. |

Times Square
$15,000 – oil on canvas – 36" h x 50" w
In 1989 New York City was in a building boom. It was very exciting. I was struck by the concentration of new construction in the Times Square area. Big, block-like structures rise toward the sky. At their bases, smaller buildings from earlier eras seem delicate by contrast. There is color everywhere. – N.R.

Taildragger
$1,800 – oil on canvas – 12" h x 18" w
The building dominates the canvas. Cutting it off just beyond the peak on the left accentuates the slope toward the right and down to the focal point, the red airplane tail sticking out of the hangar. The green bush guides the eye toward the left, preventing the viewer from slipping out of the picture plane. – N.R. |

Night Visitor
$5,500 – oil on canvas – 20" h x 30" w
When I lived at the Meyer & Thompson Smoked Fish Company at 146 Beekman Street, South Street Seaport, I came home one night to find a black Corvette parked in front. The scene has a mysterious air to it, which I emphasized by making the car part of the darkness, not of the bright light above the door. – N.R. |
